Welcome to Joseph Lamela-Macchia's Walk of Hope Personal Page
Thanks for visiting my page! Please help me to reach my goal and to support those people suffering with mental illness. Did you know that 1 in 5 people suffers with a mental illness? But only 1 in 20 of those who do suffer will seek treatment? We have to start the dialogue TODAY and I need your help. Let's get together and support those with mental illness the way we support a person with any other disease. Each year Carrier Clinic treats over 6,000 teens, adults, and older adults. People from all walks of life are treated at Carrier Clinic. Your gift will help us to help them.
I personally struggled with the symptoms of severe treatment resistant Bipolar Disorder for about six and a half years prior to seeking inpatient treatment at Carrier Clinic in the summer of 2004. I had been treated by several different psychiatrists and therapists and had had inpatient stays at a number of different hospitals. In spite of all of this I had not really made progress or experienced relief from the illness that was making my day to day life intolerable. My stay at Carrier Clinic in 2004 was an entirely different story and was one of the greatest turning points in my life. While I was at Carrier Clinic my doctors and the staff encouraged me to try a different treatment: Electro-Convulsive Therapy or ECT, because I had been treated with so many different medications, over the years, without success. At the time I was in the midst of a severe depression and had almost totally lost hope. The doctors and nurses at Carrier Clinic knew that ECT presented the best opportunity for me to begin my recovery, to restore my hope, and to live a much more fulfilling life. I was reluctant but fortunately I made what turned out to be the best decision for me, and I agreed to try ECT. Recently, on July 2, 2016, I celebrated, with several of my close friends, what was the twelve year anniversary of the day that I began ECT, the treatment that I sincerely believe has been responsible for my recovery in the years since then, has restored my hope and made my life more fulfilling, and has literally saved my life, things for which I am exceptionally grateful. I have continued having ECT as a maintenance treatment with periodic series or mini-series as needed and I have had 100% of my treatments at Carrier Clinic. I am currently still receiving ECT as a maintenance treatment. Not only has the treatment of ECT been life changing and life saving for me and many individuals for whom other treatments have not worked, but the entire staff of the Carrier Clinic ECT Department has been terrific. They are not only technically great and very well experienced, but they have always been very kind, understanding, compassionate, and accomadating. This is why I will be walking as a member of Team ECT for the Carrier Clinic Walk of Hope 2016.
Thank you very much for supporting me in making a difference in the lives of those living with mental illness and in taking necessary action to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illness and the different options for treatment, as this stigma presents a major barrier to individuals receiving help and treatment.
